How to play Wexel with friends

The same crossword for everyone, and each word belongs to whoever spells it first. Against a stranger at your level, against friends with a code, or against the house players, offline.

1 vs 1 duels

  • You both play the same crossword at the same time, over 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 rounds.
  • Each word in the grid belongs to whoever spells it first and takes their color.
  • Each word is worth its letters: SOPRANO is 7 points and SUN is 3. Whoever collects the most wins.
  • Bonus words score nothing: what you are fighting over is the grid.
  • There are no hints: in a race, a hint is not help, it is an edge.

ELO

Everyone starts at 1000. Beating someone rated higher than you moves you up more than beating someone rated lower. At first the number moves quickly so you find your place soon, and then it settles. Matchmaking looks for opponents with a similar rating.

Rooms of up to five

Open a room, pass on the code or show the QR, and play 1 to 5 rounds on the same crossword. Each player has their own color. Whoever collects the most letters wins; on a tie at the top, all of them are named.

If whoever opened the room drops out, it passes to whoever has been there longest. Rooms do not affect ELO: they are for playing with people you know.

The Forge Live

Two to five players on the same wheel of The Forge, round by round. Whoever misses the target is out, and whoever gets there first picks the card for everyone.

The house players

Wexel comes with 50 opponents, each with a name and a rating from 700 to 1600, who play right on your phone, offline. They solve at a pace that matches their level, and after three losses in a row the next one goes a little easier. There is always someone to play.

No account needed

You do not have to sign up to play online: you join as “Guest” and four digits. If you leave a game in progress, the app offers to take you back, and the board comes back as it was.

Frequently asked questions

Can I play against someone in another language?

No: duels, rooms and The Forge Live only match players of the same language, because a word only counts in its own.

How many players fit in a room?

Up to five, in rooms and in The Forge Live. A duel is for two.

Can I play a duel offline?

Yes, against the house players. Against another person you need a connection.
